International Students and Social Security Card

Social Security numbers (SSN) are generally assigned to people who are authorized to work in the United States. Social Security numbers are used to report your wages to the government. You can not legally work in the United States without a Social Security number.
Social Security will not assign you a number just to enroll in a college or school.
If you want to work in the United States-
As an international student you can work up to 20 hours on campus without any prior work authorization and certain limited off-campus employment, as permitted under Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regulations with approval by your international student counselor/DSO.
If your school has authorized you to work either on or off campus, you can apply for a Social Security number.
How do I apply for a Social Security number -
Wait until you are in the United States for at least 10 days before you apply for a Social Security number. That is how long it supposedly takes to get your legal arrival information from port of entry to local Social Security office. If you do not wait at least 10 days after your arrival to apply for Social Security, there are chances of your application getting unnecessarily delayed.
Documents you need to apply for Social Security Number-
- Immigration documents – I-94, I-20, Visa and Passport
- Work eligibility – A letter from your DSO that states you are eligible to work, confirms your current school status, and identifies your employer and the type of work you are, or will be, doing.
- Evidence of that employment - A recent pay slip or a letter from your employer. Your supervisor must sign and date the employment letter. This letter must describe: your job, start date, the number of hours you are, or will be, working and your supervisor’s name and telephone number.
- All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. Local Social Security Office will not accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. You must provide at least two separate documents.
Starting work before you get Social Security Card -
You do not need Social Security number before you start your work. While you wait for your Social Security number to arrive in mail, your employer can use a letter from Security office stating that you applied for a number and your immigration documents as proof of your authorization to work in the United States.
Important Tip -
Do not carry your card with you. Keep it in a safe place with your other important papers.
